Constipation, Allergic Reactions… and a Lesson from a Packet of Mints

I wish I had realised earlier that many over-the-counter solutions for indigestion can come with their own potential side effects, including constipation and allergic reactions.
Recently I had a small reminder of how easily digestive upset can happen — especially with children.
When a Packet of Mints Becomes a Problem
Last week my son spent his pocket money on a pack of mints that caught his eye thanks to its colourful, attractive packaging. As you might expect, the whole packet disappeared in record time.
The problem is that many sugar-free sweets and mints contain artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. While these sweeteners reduce sugar content, they can sometimes cause digestive upset when consumed in larger quantities.
Common symptoms may include:
Bloating
Gas
Stomach cramps
Diarrhoea
And yes — if an entire packet is eaten in one go, those effects can appear rather quickly.
By bedtime that evening, my son was complaining of exactly those symptoms:
Bloating
Gas
Stomach cramps
The urge to fully evacuate bowels but experiencing constipation
As many parents know, children’s ailments often seem to appear late in the evening when everyone is ready for sleep!
The Dilemma With Over-the-Counter Remedies
At moments like this, it can be tempting to reach immediately for an over-the-counter indigestion remedy. However, some conventional medications can themselves lead to unwanted side effects, including constipation or allergic reactions.
So on that cold Friday evening, I found myself looking for a way to ease my son’s symptoms while avoiding adding anything that might create further discomfort.
Turning to Homeopathy
Drawing on my training in natural homeopathic remedies, I decided to approach the situation gently.
First, I made him comfortable with a hot water bottle, which can often help soothe abdominal discomfort.
Then I turned to my homeopathic reference books.
The remedy that best matched his symptoms was Arsenicum Album.
Why Arsenicum Album?
In homeopathy, remedies are chosen by matching a person’s symptoms to the remedy profile. Arsenicum Album is commonly associated with symptoms such as:
Swollen, painful abdomen
Cramping pains in the bowels
Digestive upset after food
Loss of appetite
Relief from warmth or hot applications
Offensive gas
Alternating constipation and diarrhoea
These indicators aligned closely with what my son was experiencing.
I gave him two pills initially and then repeated the dose every 30 minutes for three doses.
A Gradual Return to Comfort
After the first doses he began to feel some relief. By the third round, he had settled enough to fall asleep comfortably — which meant the rest of the household could also enjoy a peaceful night.
Moments like these remind me why I value having a small natural first-aid cupboard at home.
What Happens in Your Home After Dark?
It also made me reflect on something many families experience — those late-evening moments when someone in the household suddenly develops a cough, stomach ache, fever, or other discomfort.
When the world is quiet and the pharmacies are closed, it can be reassuring to have gentle remedies on hand.
Over time, I’ve built a small collection of natural remedies that I keep at home and have used successfully with my own family.
In future blog posts, I’ll be sharing more about what I keep in my natural first-aid cupboard and how these remedies can support common family ailments.

The emphasis on observing symptoms carefully and seeking appropriate medical advice when needed is especially valuable for families. Having access to an Urgent Care ER in Kingwood is also important when abdominal pain, allergic reactions, or worsening digestive symptoms require prompt professional evaluation.
